Right to Choose: Front of Package Labeling Campaign

The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) and its partners launched the third phase of their “Front of Package Labeling Campaign”. Keeping the consumers in mind, these labels will alert the public of food and beverages high in sugar, salt, or cholesterol, but it is said there’s heavy pushback from private entities.

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular diseases or diabetes are what the heart foundation of Jamaica and its partners are seeking to reduce through their advocacy for front of package warning labels.  The push was accelerated by the advent of COVID-19.

Partner in the initiative, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados, says this will help protect the health of consumers and give them the right to choose what goes into their bodies.

Though many manufacturers have a nutrition label at the back, studies have found that consumers find it hard to read, hence the reason for wanting clear warnings at the front. However, there has been some resistance from the food and beverage industry in complying with the call.
