Despite the recent move to increase salaries for the nation’s social workers and psychologists as a means of reducing crime, at least one expert fears social workers will need much more to stay in the country.
The university lecturer told CVM LIVE, the grass appears much greener for these graduates abroad. Minister of National Security, Dr Horace Chang, believes intervention in schools is crucial to alleviate this persistent issue, noting there is a need for more clinical psychologists and social workers. This recommendation, however, is flawed, according to one expert.
Dr Jason Wynter, Head of the Behavioural and Social Sciences Department at Northern Caribbean University, says undergraduate social workers are leaving the island in droves, for several reasons, including remuneration. Watch the report:
