PNP calls for Johnson-Smith to share alleged harassment emails

The People’s National Party (PNP) is urging the leader of Government Business in the Senate, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith to share the contents of an email with them, involving the former opposition senator that allegedly harassed her.

During a debate on gender-based violence in the senate on Friday, Senator Johnson Smith made the startling revelation after the opposition criticized the government for being hypocritical about the issue alluding to a recent video allegedly involving George Wright, a government member of parliament at the time.

There were several heated exchanges in the senate on Friday as the issue of gender-based violence continues to take centre stage.

But while the discussion on both sides of the aisle was seemingly in the agreement of the harsh realities that women and girls endure at the hands of men, the opposition senators were criticizing the government’s approach to the issue which was triggered by a viral video allegedly involving a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) member of parliament at the time.

During the sitting, Leader of Government Business, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith revealed that she was allegedly harassed by a former opposition senator years ago.

Johnson smith revealed that she was sent emails from the senator which made her feel uncomfortable. But now, the opposition- People’s National Party- is questioning the legitimacy of the senator’s claims while alluding to her timing of the revelation during the debate.

In a statement, the P.N.P said the only way to bring closure is for the claimed harassment emails to be shared with them. When CVM Live reached out to the ministry for a comment, we were told Johnson Smith would not be available to grant interviews on Monday.
