It boils down to some level of indiscipline. That is the main cause of motor vehicle accidents across the island according to the Head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary Mckenzie.
Speaking at the Drunk Driving Town Hall meeting recently, authorities lamented on the accidents that could have been avoided if caution was exercised on the road. Mckenzie notes if motorists would reduce their speed, there would be fewer accidents.
However, Vice President of Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) Everton Styles, says accidents result from the lack of proper infrastructure in major areas where public transportation operates.
While drunk driving is not recorded as having a significant effect on the percentage of fatal accidents, McKenzie says continuous research needs to be done in that regard.
As the Christmas season draws nigh, they are urging motorists to refrain from drinking and driving.
