Election 2020

Incoming Government Has Multiple Crises To Manage

Multiple crises to manage- Jamaicans are heading to the polls to choose a government that’ll manage the multiple challenges facing the island. Whoever is elected will be tasked with organizing a response to the pandemic, which in the past week has recorded positive cases in triple digits, evidence of an intense period of transmission.

It is anticipated that the electoral process will lead to an explosive spread of the Coronavirus, COVID-19 over the next three weeks. The Health Ministry has reported that some hospitals have reached full capacity. The next governing party will have to lead a charge in resuscitating the economy, which the Bank of Jamaica expects to contract anywhere between 7% to 10% during the 2020/21 fiscal year.

Leading industries are struggling to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, plus the Jamaican dollar continues to lose value.
Dr. Kadamwe Knife, Lecturer at U.W.I, Mona says the country needs an exceptional Government matched by exceptional opposition. Education at all levels hangs in the balance ahead of the new school year, which was pushed back to October 5 amid a recent surge in cases.

Since the closure of the school in early March, thousands of students are yet to receive any form of learning. Another crisis for management is the problem of crime, which has spiraled out of control across the country over the years.
With tens of thousands of Jamaicans losing their jobs, the government is expected to offset some of the burdens haunting Jamaicans by catering to the growing dependency on the government.
