Tropical Storm Elsa Damage Estimated At 800M

While there were no reported casualties linked to the passage of Tropical Storm Elsa in Jamaica over the weekend. Prime Minister, Andrew Holness says the damage left by the tropical storm is estimated to cost the government over 800 million dollars.

The damage estimates are divided into two categories; cost to clean and clear roadways and drains of silt and debris and the cost to make roads accessible. 

Prime Minister, Andrew Holness says the National Works Agency (NWA) reported that 177 roads were impacted by the tropical storm.

The Prime Minister says it is the intention of the government, to allocate more funds to conduct mitigation efforts and so far 100 million has been allocated to conduct the first phase of the mitigation program in constituencies.

PM Holness urged Members of Parliament to ensure that the process is completed within the next 21 days.

Holness also urged emergency agencies and citizens to remain alert and prepared as more disasters are expected this hurricane season.
