Teachers Stage Another Island-Wide Sick Out

Another call was made by teachers to the Government about the inconsistencies with salaries stemming from the government’s compensation review. The frustration of the teachers led to another sick out being staged by educators across the island. President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, La Sonja Harrison, has called on educators across the island to support industrial action against the government for what she describes as discrepancies and anomalies following the recent compensation review.

On Tuesday teachers across the island staged a sick out. This comes on the heels of the government’s announcement of the pay increase for politicians a week ago. CVM LIVE understands official communication was first sent to Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke on April 18, requesting the establishment of a technical committee to treat with anomalies and discrepancies. There is been no response Harrison says, highlighting that teachers hoped issues would have been sorted and that their April salaries would reflect as such.

Additionally, teachers who have already been paid for the month of May have indicated that salary issues remain unresolved. She has therefore called on educators to voice their displeasure through industrial action. Meantime, Education Minister Fayval Williams spoke with our news team earlier today regarding the strike.
