With the renewed concerns and upsurge in abductions and murder recently some taxi drivers have been taking more flak from commuters. One taxi operator who spoke anonymously with CVM Live this week is pleading with the Government to initiate a plan to protect commuters and decent taxi operators.

With recurring robberies and abductions being carried out by alleged fake taxi drivers, the traveling public has grown concerned for their safety using public transportation. One taxi operator is urging the Government to take responsibility in protecting the people and the reputation of legitimate taxi men.

He says the unorganized structure makes it easier for impostors to infiltrate the taxi system carrying out criminal activities. The operator says he believes in order to control abductions; the Government needs to focus on enforcement that will distinguish taxi operators from perpetrators.

He says instead taxi drivers are being targeted by police for ticketing. He says the government should start by providing proper parking spaces for taxi drivers in congested areas such as Half Way Tree. Efforts to get a comment from the Transport Minister, Robert Montague and the Transport Authority on Wednesday, November 10 proved futile.
