Students Rely On The Mercy Of Markers For CXC Results

There are mixed reactions from students and teachers in anticipation of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) results that should be released today, September 22, 2020, at 5 PM.  While some students are confident about securing in the work, others are relying on the mercy of the markers which could affect the number of passes due to COVID-19

The students have had little to no face to face interaction with teachers since March when the Government announced the closure of all schools.

Some had to continue learning in the virtual classroom while others who did not have any electronic devices had to find other ways to absorb their curriculum.

One student, Shanique Gayle said she had to teach herself at one point leading up to her exams. While, Richard Burke who is an educator says he expects a reduction in the number of passes this year due to the closure of schools in March, the large percentage of students who do not have access to an electronic device and or reliable internet.

And as it relates to schools scheduled for reopening on October 5, the students say they are worried.

The Ministry of Education announced a combination of face-to-face and online interactions but with the spike in COVID-19 cases, the virtual classroom is seemingly becoming the more practical solution.

But for one parent who is also an educator, she worries that despite the threat of the coronavirus, the extended closure of schools will affect the mental health of not only parents but children as well.
