Senior PNP Member Reflects on Unpredictable Election Results

Senior PNP Member reflects – While reflecting on the results of the General Election, one senior Member of Parliament elects, Dr. Angela Brown Burke says no one could have predicted the results including the margin of loss or victory. The People’s National Party (PNP) is now assessing its performance in the recent General Election and the way forward.

In an interview with CVM Live, Brown Burke said, “Certainly on our side even those individuals who thought it was a very difficult battle would not have expected to see this kind of result in terms of the margin of victory and some of the seats we would have lost…”

Brown Burke admits that there are internal issues to be dealt with and believes these might have influenced the outcome of the General Election. Internally there were expectations that the Leader of the Party, Dr. Peter Phillips would have addressed those concerns post-election. However, he announced he was leaving the office.

“There are still issues that need to be resolved. They cannot be swept under the table. We have to deal with them.”

Brown-Burke says the defeat by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) cannot be attributed to one factor but it is a concern the People’s National Party will have to discuss.

She made a note to add, “I believe that a good place is to really start with those who did not come out to vote, who we have traditionally counted on for support and find out what really is behind them staying home and listen and accept what it is they have to say to us.”

Brown Burke won against the Jamaica Labour Party’s Moureen Lorne in the 2020 General Election retaining her South West St Andrew seat. The final results concluded with the JLP winning 48 seats leaving the PNP with 15 seats
