Sangster Intl Airport Runway To Be Extended At $70M U.S

The operators of the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James, have commenced work to extend the runway at a cost of US$70 million dollars.

Transport and Mining Minister, Robert Montague, said the extension forms part of the airport’s capital improvement plan, designed to ensure the facility s continued compliance with local and international aviation safety and security standards.

The extension of the runway is expected to reposition the airport to accommodate larger and more powerful planes, while significantly reducing arrival and departure times.

The project will also establish safety areas and the installation of a jet blast screen to enhance the safe and effective use of the taxiway.

Montague notes that this is not just a facelift, but a comprehensive overhaul that is safer and efficient and it will greatly boost the country’s economy.

He adds that other related services will benefit from the works set to be undertaken.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of MBJ Airports Limited, operators of the Sangster International Airport, Dr. Rafael Echevarne is leaving the company as of January 31, 2020.

Dr. Echevarne served in the capacity of CEO for the past four-and-a-half years and was instrumental in the transformation of the airport.
