Road Safety Unit Remains Concerned For Noisy Mufflers

Loud mufflers, a disturbing cacophony. An increase in access to motorbikes for commercial use since Covid-19 restrictions, and with company delivery services becoming prevalent, has populated the growth of motorcycle culture in Jamaica which has led to high level of public nuisance.

According to the Road Safety Unit, western parishes Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, St James and Clarendon have brought attention to the removing of silencers from mufflers which has become an area of great concern. As Hudson Sinclair provides insight into policy often mocked by motorcyclists, she notes that decibel output levels are affected when muffler silencers are removed.

As a warning to road users, she mentions the Island Traffic Authority and the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force as allies to subject penalties to motorcyclists who go against the road traffic regulations. Hudson Sinclair encourages the inspection of motorbike mufflers before its commercial and domestic use, especially if these bikes have been modified.
