Enraged residents of Gibraltar, St. Ann disrupted operations at a Noranda Bauxite Mining site on Monday, July 19, to protest over issues arising from mining in the area. Despite being offered compensation by the bauxite company at the onset of the contract, they believe more must be done to protect their health.

The placard-bearing residents stormed the nearby mining site, demanding that their concerns be met.

The dust stemming from the mining works is among the complaints that residents say create serious health issues for many. According to a young woman living in the area, her grandfather’s underlying medical conditions are worsening.

Members of the security forces were on standby to prevent the demonstration from escalating.
