Reform of Education Report, Prompts Education Ministry

The 346 page Reform of Education in Jamaica Report launched recently has prompted the Education Ministry to take more efficient measures towards educating the nation’s youth. The report was presented by Education Minister Fayval Williams.

The report highlights that Jamaica’s teaching profession is too committed to a traditional, teacher centred method of instruction aimed at passive students, which discourages learning.

The commission is suggesting a radical shift toward an interactional teaching and learning method in which the instructional core is a collaborative interaction between flexible teachers, engaged students and a dynamically relevant curriculum.

Meanwhile, the education minister raised concerns regarding education reform. The minister notes while the report has been thorough and comprehensive, the task at hand is not solely on the education ministry but rather the nation at large.

While the ministry is guided by the recommendations in the report, Minister Williams calls for greater accessibility of information.
