Police Refute Aspects of Colleague’s Toll Road Death

Director of Welfare at the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Deputy Superintendent Raymond Wilson, is refuting previous media reports surrounding the circumstances that led to the death of Constable Donald Carr, following a motor vehicle accident along the North-South Highway in St. Ann, on Saturday.

37-year-old Constable Carr who was assigned to the St. Andrew South police division was on his way to St. Ann when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving, overturned, and landed in a ditch along the North-South Highway. He subsequently died from injuries sustained.

A recording surfaced with a woman claiming to be a police officer, saying the police were obstructed in their attempts to assist their colleague to the hospital because they were unable to pay the toll fee. However, in a message to police officers obtained by CVM LIVE, Director of Welfare at the Jamaica Constabulary Force, DSP Raymond Wilson says the St. Ann police entered the toll to assist and they encountered few problems only when exiting with constable Carr. The message went further to say the delay lasted for a few minutes as the officers paid at the Golden Grove Toll and drove through. However, they lifted the barrier and drove through at the Mammee Bay Toll without paying.  DSP Wilson says no other police team tried to access the crash site and were denied due to lack of money and says all aspects of the matter are being taken seriously and investigations are underway to accurately understand the gaps.

While noting that the issue of police units on duty being restricted toll access should have been resolved long before now, DSP Wilson highlighted that it would not be accurate to say it contributed to delayed assistance. Watch the full report:
