Following an intense meeting at the Police Officer’s Club on Thursday, multiple police groups are expressing disapproval for the current public sector compensation review, proposed by the government. The groups are adamant the proposal does not reflect their value to society and are demanding more. The Police Officer Association, Jamaica Police Federation, and the United District Constable Association echoed these concerns, expounding on the insufficient benefits that were provided in the review. The representative groups say after thorough consultation of the proposal, it is evident that the police officer’s income and standard of living will be reduced, and that they feel the proposal was a deception since the members cannot benefit from it.
Further lamenting their woes, the group expounded on the need for the police to receive proper remuneration and a welfare system that can accommodate a livable and sustainable lifestyle, especially in this economic crisis. They are calling for the compensation review to acknowledge the sacrifices, and hectic work environments the police endure, to reflect the value and importance of the police in society. They are adamant that further action will follow, once the group meets with respective membership to discuss their findings.
