Major Crimes Down By 19% – In a Digital Press Conference on February 1, Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson updated the nation on recent statistics and the results of strategies implemented to address crime and violence in Jamaica. He explains major crimes declined by 19 per cent, despite a recording of over one hundred and ten (110) murders since the start of 2022.
The Police Commissioner is commending the security forces for the ‘reduction in crime’. He made reference to statistical evidence to prove that there has been a sizeable reduction in crime in January 2022 in comparison to January 2021. General Anderson reported that there has been a 19% decrease in all major crimes, specifically 6% of which are murders. That is 94 fewer major crimes and nine fewer murders in comparison to last year.
However, he says of the murders committed in 2022, 72% are gang-related, and 19% stem from interpersonal conflicts. January 2022 recorded thirteen (13) more or 17%, firearms seizures when compared to 202.1
