PM Holness: Covid Compliance Must Be Maintained

Speaking at the opening of the Mount Salem Police Station in St. James, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has warned citizens the lack of covid compliance may forced him to take action if their behaviour threatens the safety of the population.

The Minister’s warning comes two weeks after the Government relaxed restrictions intended to curb the spread of the virus.

Holness notes that the Government is watching the country’s COVID-19 figures keenly.

The Prime Minister said there has had persons surveying parties, nightclubs, restaurants and other gathering spots.

He says he has observed that young people, in particular, are not adhering to the COVID-19 protocols.

Holness says, the country’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-Mckenzie‘s report during cabinet on Monday, July 12, shows a slight increase in the positivity rate and hospitalizations.

He notes that while other countries such as those in Europe have been easing their restrictions, they have higher vaccination levels and are still experiencing a surge in cases.

He urged Jamaicans to be vigilant as only an estimated 10 percent of our population have received the first does of the covid vaccine and only 4 to 5 percent are fully vaccinated.

Holness says the only solution to Jamaica overcoming the pandemic is through personal responsibility and accountability.
