NWA Responds to Tropical Storm Ida Damage

Communications and Customer Services Manager at the National Works Agency, (NWA) Stephen Shaw, says since heavy showers from Tropical Storm Ida, on Thursday, August 26, several roadways have been rendered impassable.

He says, while the Bog Walk Gorge in St. Catherine remains closed, the Winston Jones Highway in Manchester is again was rendered impassable as a result of a landslide, however he noted that work was done to remove the blockage and it is now accessible to pedestrians and motorists.

Just over a week ago Tropical Storm Grace, graced sections of the island bringing with it flood rains and added frustration to those worst impacted. No sooner than the NWA concluded that the country’s infrastructure had been spared the worst, Tropical Storm Ida developed gifting lingering showers en route to the US, leaving behind more obstacles in the pandemic.

A flash flood warning has been in effect since Thursday, August 26, for sections of the country. Some roadways remain closed. Shaw says some communities have been marooned due to flooding and landslides. He notes that heavy flooding was reported in the Lionel Town area, the upper section of Clarendon was also affected.
