NPTAJ: Fraudulent Teachers Should Be Fined $2.5 Million

The National Parent Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) wants fraudulent teachers to be fined 2.5 million dollars, instead of five hundred thousand dollars as suggested in the Jamaica Teaching Council Act, 2022.

General secretary of the NPTAJ, Donovan Mayne, however, says different offences must have more specific fines as he believes that the initial fine of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) is too low to act as of deterrent. He says the licensing of certain professions serves to protect the public while noting specific fines must be set for different offences.

Mayne went on to say that in certain circumstances the initial figure would be excessively punitive.

In the meanwhile, the General Secretary is calling for the protection of teachers who are not deemed qualified for teaching, based on the new definition of a teacher. Watch the full report for more details:
