Non-Exec-President for Ja Republic

Though the destination of Jamaica’s Republic may seem some distance away, it seems citizens can begin to contemplate the role and function of their potential future president, after the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte, shared the rationale behind the preference for a non-executive presidency.

After the Vale Royal talks on 19 February, the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) named Senator Donna Scott-Mottley and Anthony Hylton to the Constitutional Reform Committee.

Minister Malahoo Forte also explained that republic status can only be put in place if there is a majority vote of all Members of the House and Senate. Citizens of Jamaica are also expected to have their say on the matter by way of referendum, which was hoped to occur prior to the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2025.
