Chairman of the Minimum Wage Advisory Commission, Dr. Ronald Robinson says their focus is not only on the employees but also on the employers who will be expected to pay the new rate, should another increase be approved.
There is a vast difference between a liveable wage and Jamaica’s minimum wage, according to the Chairman of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Minimum Wage Advisory Commission, Dr. Ronald Robinson, during Wednesday’s consultation with business representatives and stakeholders in Mandeville. The meeting was in order to source perspective on minimum wage earners. Dr. Robinson says over the last month, the conversation surrounding minimum wage has become more prevalent, with attention being placed on the recipients’ working environment. He adds the court ruling of Marksman vs their then “contracted workers”, sought refuge from the Minimum Wage Act, and paves the way for employees to actually be paid their worth.
Vice President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions St. Patrice Ennis, adds, an increase in the minimum wage will be beneficial for the entire nation. Watch the report:
