Malahoo Forte: New Bail Act Seeks to Strike Balance

‘Striking the right balance so that the course of justice is not perverted’; is how Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Marlene Malahoo Forte described efforts to rewrite and repeal the Bail Act of 2020. 

Under the new act once approved, persons on murder charges will be denied bail and that granted bail will be required to wear electronic bracelets. The bill now heads to a Joint Select Committee of Parliament for review before being brought for Parliamentary approval. The bill will replace and repeal the Bail Act of 2020, as the government seeks to strike a balance between individual freedom and national security. 

The bill brought Wednesday by Legal and Constitutional Affairs Minister Marlene Malahoo forte will boast several changes. Among them, is the introduction of electronic bracelets for persons on bail.

The Minister says the new Bail Act will see additional provisions for surety and jail time for those who abscond bail.
