Subsequent to the announcement of Jamaica’s Constitutional Reform Committee members late last month, several issues have been raised and several agreements reached. The update was provided by the Co-Chair of the Committee and Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Marlene Malahoo Forte, on Tuesday.
So far five meetings have already been convened with members of the Constitutional Reform Committee, and consensus reached on several issues. The Committee recommends the President of Jamaica be selected by nomination from the Prime Minister, after consultation with the Opposition Leader. This decision, however, did not sit well with the leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding who countered by insisting there have been instances where people have been appointed despite reasoned objection from the Opposition.
