Lack Of Data Around Gender-Based Violence Against Women

It’s a fact that more women than ever before are involved in frontline politics. There is data to support this statement. However, it’s also true that the female population in Jamaica is at greater risk of violence, yet according to a leading women’s advocate, there is no data to corroborate this.

According to a 2019 United Nations study, El Salvador tops the list with 13.9 out of every 100,000 women murdered in 2017, followed by Jamaica with 11 per 100,000 in the same year. With this in mind, Woman’s Advocate, Sebrina Brown says there is a lack of substantive data collected in Jamaica.

According to Brown, only administrative data is available, from the police, social services and the hospital, that is when an incident is reported or treated. Since the start of the year, numerous crimes have been committed against women in the most gruesome way.

Several have gone missing without a trace. Although efforts have been made by leading agencies and by extension the government, to reduce the prevalence of gender-based violence among women and girls, evidently more needs to be done.

More research and in-depth analysis surrounding issue is recommended; Robian Williams has the details in this recap:
