For some tech manufacturers deep sea mining is a foolproof way to access raw material for battery production. However, environmentalists say it’s a sure way to exacerbate the effects of climate change. Jhanielle Powell was present at the “Stop Deep Sea Mining” media briefing where local and international bodies outlined the disadvantages of tapping into this risky industry.
Director and founder of the Jamaica Climate Change Youth Council (JCCYC), Eleanor Terrelonge explains that fishing and tourism will be directly impacted by this. Additionally, she highlights, that no journalists were granted access to the meetings this year further demonstrating the International Seabed Authority’s (ISA) reluctance to involve key voices in a discussion that will have a global impact.
In the meantime, all eyes are on Jamaica which has its own contract to conduct and benefit from deep sea mining. These and other non-government associations across the planet are calling for a moratorium while advocating for further scientific studies of the great unknown, the deep sea. Watch the full report:
