Health Minister: “Another Possible Dengue Outbreak Could Occur”

In the wake of recent statements from the Minister of Health and Wellness regarding the potential for another outbreak of dengue fever and the ongoing efforts to address it, the opposition is proposing strategies to better prepare the public. Speaking at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James, Dr. Christopher Tufton, the Minister of Health and Wellness, expressed concerns about the possibility of a new dengue fever outbreak on the island, attributed in part to the ongoing drought. This year’s drought has been marked as the most severe in comparison to previous years. Over the past year, Jamaica has been grappling with prolonged drought conditions alongside intense heat.

Given these circumstances, Dr. Tufton explained that the Ministry has initiated testing to identify the specific type of dengue that individuals might be affected by. In response to these developments, Jesse James Clarke, the Opposition’s Deputy Spokesperson on Health, is urging individuals to adopt necessary preventive measures. Clarke also shared insights into potential governmental strategies for combating the virus and raising public awareness. Watch the report:
