Five alleged gunmen were killed, during a joint police-military operation in the community of Bedward Gardens, August Town early this morning. A soldier was reportedly injured during the operation. One of the men killed was the reputed leader of a feared gang
Police say all the men who were killed were wanted by them.
The lawmen say there were many operating bases these alleged gunmen operated from in the hills.
The CVM team , traversed the dense hideaway in the hills, which has proven to be difficult terrain for the police over the years in pursuit of criminals.
There was clear evidence of a definite struggle.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Stephanie Lindsay says the operation also resulted in the apprehension of seven illegal weapons ranging from high powered guns to pistols and ammunition.
The other four deceased men ranged in age from 20 to 24 years old.
However, residents within the community voiced that they were allegedly treated like animals during the operation.
Police say operations will continue as there is still evidence of threats that exists within the Bedward Gardens community.
