Fire Razes Childhood Home of Bob Marley & Bunny Wailer

Fire of unknown origin razed the house on Second Street in Trench Town, where Reggae legends Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer lived as children. Families who resided in the building have now been displaced.

Ruins is what is left of the literal birthplace of reggae music and the yard once occupied by both reggae icons and the family of Bob Marley, the fire razed took place early on the morning of Saturday, September 18.

According to an eyewitness, she heard the crackling sound of the fire, she noted a man who is said to be mentally unstable was asleep on the second level of the building. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for the South St. Andrew constituency, Mark Golding, says there were already plans to relocate the residents from the building and renovate the structure as it has been fallen into a dilapidated condition. He said he hopes the project that has been in progress over the last two years continues.

Golding says he intends to mobilize some support for the families that have been displaced. He notes that the community is vulnerable to fires due to the decayed buildings and the lack of investment in housing in inner cities.
