Family and Probate Division Added To Judiciary

The Judiciary of Jamaica has established a new division of the Supreme Court to improve the efficiency of processing family cases. Matters concerning families that were previously heard in the High Court Division (HCV) will now be heard by the family and probate division.

Chief Justice, Hon. Bryan Skyes says all matters related to the distribution if a union, specially the maintenance, custody and division of property, will be dealt under their own resources.

Justice Skyes says this is a two to three-year project. Two judges will be assigned to the newly formed division, these judges will have their own court clerks, courtrooms, and chambers to deal with these types of cases. The division aims to improve the judiciary in Jamaica to have cases completed within a 24-month period.

The other divisions of the Supreme Court are the Gun Court, the Commercial Court, and the revenue court where caseload backlogs are less than 10 percent. This level of performance is what Justice Skyes wants to bring to the family and probate division.
