Face-to-Face Learning Could be Impacted by Third Wave

Ahead of the much anticipated return to face-to-face learning in September, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced tighter restrictions to stem the third wave of COVID-19 infections on Monday, July 26.

Mr. Holness notes a third wave could significantly affect a return to normality in the education sector.

Currently, seven (7) hospitals are in the red zone, which means they are nearing capacity, and Jamaica’s transmission rate has also elevated from medium to high in a matter of days.

The recent uptick in COVID-19 cases threatens the country’s ability to engage students in face-to-face learning come September.

The PM says he doesn’t regret his decision to ease restrictions earlier this year when pressed about whether it was a wrong move to relax the measures in June.

Places of worship, gyms, bars, and dining establishments should now accommodate only 50% capacity, are among the new measures.

Operation hours have also been revised to complement the 8 pm curfew.

Though the Delta variant has not been identified on the island, concerns are being raised as to whether the increase in travels for the holiday period might usher the variant into the country.

And as vaccine hesitancy remains widespread PM Holness says it is very likely vaccinated Jamaicans will receive preferential treatment in certain situations.
