Erosion in Parnassus Clarendon Gets Worse

A year later in the community of Parnassus in York Town, Clarendon much has changed but not for the better. The residents who were concerned that the rains would soon wash their homes away are now seeing their fears manifested.

The torrential rains last October in the Parnassus community in Trelawny have left residents concerned after the deluge eroded farms causing great devastation. Almost a year after, this situation has only worsened.

Councilor for the York Town division Uphel Purcell says this issue developed after a license was granted approving an entity to mine from the Rio Minho.

Purcell says this mining has ultimately caused the river to change its course affecting residents in the surrounding communities. Residents say when it rains worry descends on the community as the volume of water channeled from the river cuts off chunks of their lands giving them many sleepless nights.

One resident says the authorities should consider the use of special dams to prevent the destruction of the community.

The National Environment and Planning Agency, (NEPA) on Thursday, September 23, says they will be making checks on the matter. In the meantime, residents say since the media visited the community last year, not much has been done to help the people.
