Cubans in Jamaica Protest Outside Cuban Embassy

Scores of Cubans residing in Jamaica demonstrated outside the Cuban Embassy in St. Andrew on July 13 in solidarity with protesters in Cuba. The Cubans demanded liberation from the communist regime and denounced violent acts against citizens in the Spanish country.

In Cuba, thousands have been protesting and voicing their concerns about the collapse of the economy, price hikes, food and medicine shortages, and the Government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are also calling on the United States of America for help in their fight against the dictatorship while highlighting the deaths and the strain on their economy.

There has been at least one death, a 36-year-old man who died during a clash between protesters and police on the outskirts of Havana on Monday, July 12. More than one hundred and forty (140) Cubans have either been arrested or reported missing since protests began on Sunday, July 11.

Cuba’s Interior Ministry, Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas, did not state the cause of death but alleged he was part of a group that attacked a Government facility. However, witnesses say security forces attacked peaceful protesters.

A Cuban woman who has been residing in Jamaica for ten (10) years says she is no longer afraid to break her silence.
