With 2022 closing its chapter with 1498 murders, Criminologist and Security Expert Dr. Jason Mckay says the murder rate in Jamaica can be controlled by adjusting the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) Act. He notes the murder rate over the last 30 years was influenced by the Trevor Mcmillan era in the early 90s, Jamaicans for Justice and the INDECOM era of arresting police.
Dr. McKay says oftentimes officers feel demotivated in their duties which has helped to increase crime. He reiterates during 2014 to 2017 when the murder rate grew by 63% in Jamaica, INDECOM launched a campaign that sought to prosecute, arrest and charge officers which caused a demotivating effect. Meantime, he is calling for a strategy to increase the number of persons who join the force. Dr McKay was speaking recently at The Police Officers Club in St Andrew.
