Climate Financing, a Priority for Jamaica at COP26

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is set to participate in the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, COP26 in Glasgow Scotland. The world’s largest climate conference will see leaders coming together to declare their contributions to limiting global warming and the prevention of climate change.

Other Cabinet members at the global climate talks are Pearnel Charles Jr., Dr. Nigel Clarke, and Senator Kamina Johnson Smith. COP26 is being held under the co-presidency of the United Kingdom and Italy from October 31 to November 12.

The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, COP26 is a crucial summit aimed at brokering talks among world leaders to treat the threat of global warming. The hope is for committed plans to be agreed on, to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, a specified goal in the Paris Agreement.

Speaking in Parliament recently, Minister of Housing, Urban Renewal, Environment and Climate Change, Pearnel Charles Jr., referred to the international meeting as the most critical one of this decade.

On the COP26 agenda for Jamaica and other developing countries is the issue of climate finance. Another issue of interest to Jamaica is compensation for loss and damage as a result of the impact of extreme weather and climate events.COP26 is to be held from October 31 to November 12 in Glasgow, Scotland.
