Classes Resume For Students Amid Covid-19

Classes Resume – Children have returned to school in some parts of the world, for example in China and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa. There, students are supposed to wear masks and are required to follow sanitization processes to ensure that the Coronavirus, Covid-19 risk remains low.

“When COVID-19 first disrupted education around the world, all of us had many questions. How do we keep students learning? How do we make sure children get other critical support normally provided through schools such as healthy food? How do we reopen schools while keeping children safe? Now, we’ve learnt a lot. We know what works,” said Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Henrietta H. Fore.

Classes Resume – But, there are questions about whether reopening schools is the best decision. In August over one thousand two hundred (1200) students in the Georgia School District, United States were quarantined. This was after several of their peers tested positive during the first week of school. The United States of America now has over six million Coronavirus, COVID-19 cases, and almost two hundred thousand (200,000) deaths.

At the local level in Jamaica, the Education Ministry had indicated that reopening is dependent on advice from the Ministry of Health and Wellness. COVID-19 cases are going up but there is no clear indication whether the reopening date of October 5 will change. More and more persons are skeptical of sending their children back into a physical environment – home, appears to be safer, for now.

“This is a time when you want to make sure the information that you have is correct. This is extended to information from the Ministry of Health and Wellness,” says Chief Executive Officer of the National Parenting Support Commission, Kaysia Kerr.
