Following the Agriculture Minister’s announcement of strategies to boost Jamaica’s food security, due to the ongoing pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine invasion which has impacted the country’s basic food prices.
The Minister went further, to commend Jamaica’s farmers and stakeholders for the record-breaking number in production levels.
Agriculture Minister Pearnel Charles Jr, says the sector has seen unprecedented growth over the past 10 years, with production levels surpassing 7-hundred thousand tonnes last year.
He notes that despite the diverse challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Jamaica’s agriculture sector has remained resilient. The minister lauded the farmers and other stakeholders for these record-breaking numbers.
Charles says the livestock sector has been one of the hardest hits over the last year with concerns of shortage and prices, He however says chicken meat production is on the rise.
Meanwhile, the minister says the government will be boosting agriculture in primary and secondary schools, at a cost of about 15 million dollars for production supplies.
