Dr. Tufton Says Jamaica is Handling the Covid-19 Crisis Better Than Expected

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton says, all things considered, Jamaica is handling the COVID-19 crisis much better than expected. This he attributes to the government, private sector, and citizens playing their part. Dr. Tufton says despite the country now in the community transmission phase of the virus, citizens should remain optimistic and continue to observe the protocols.

He affirms that approximately 17, 000 health care professionals remain committed to the fight. Dr. Tufton also dismisses claims that the ministry has stopped contact tracing. He says this is ongoing. Over 5, 700 persons have tested positive for the virus. Chief medical officer Dr. Jacqueline Bisasor-Mckenzie says 96.6 percent of persons who have been infected have had mild or no symptoms She adds that only 3.3 percent have experienced moderate to severe illness and have been hospitalized.

As it relates to deaths from the virus, the CMO also highlights that 54 of the 77 deaths recorded as on Wednesday, September 23 were persons 60 years and older. She says it is clear, the over 60 age group must be protected.
