A newly elected government now facing a new phase of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Jamaica; Local public health officials in consultation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization agreed on September 2 that the country is now experiencing community transmission of the virus.
This is expected to result in significant spikes in positive cases and increased difficulty in tracing contacts of existing cases.

It has been five years since Jamaica embarked on the road to establishing and building out a legal ganja and hemp industry. The goal has been for the development of an orderly industry where the plant and it’s by-products are used for medical, therapeutic, and scientific purposes.

There was much optimism at the start of the journey about the great prospects to be reaped in light of Jamaica’s history with the growth of the plant. But this has seemingly turned into despair, disappointment, and despondence for several players in the sector who've bemoaned publicly the slow pace of development.

But with the Planning Institute of Jamaica now forecasting a 9-10% contraction in the local economy for the current fiscal year is this industry in a position to make its mark and contribute to economic recovery and growth?

The Cannabis Licensing Authority is the agency mandated to create regulations to guide the industry and issue licenses. Permits and authorization for the handling of ganja and hemp.
We sat down with its legal officer and director of research, development, and communication to gauge the current direction of the agency.
Felicia Bailey provided an overview of the current state of the industries and activities now taking place.

The impact of the global pandemic on the local economy has once again put the importance of the agriculture sector front and centre.
With 230 thousand farmers and some 20 thousand fisherfolk the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of families and an entire country depend on not just the survival but the forward movement of the industry.
Speaking at a webinar hosted by Jamaica promotions last month state minister in the Ministry of Industry Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries Floyd Green was optimistic that the sector was on a growth path.
He reflected that the strategies implemented to assist farmers at the start of the pandemic by purchasing excess produce were successful.

You don't have to stretch your imagination too far as such a platform exists and the mastermind is a Jamaican.
It was launched in Kingston on July 15.
The Oexone platform facilitates Diaspora trade, commerce, and investment opportunities. It was established as a non-denominational, non-biased regional platform for trade, investments, marketing, value chain capacity building, and payment services to handle local and cross border import and export transactions.
It's the one economic exchange for the prosperity of all.
Robert Kibo Thompson is the founder and CEO of Oex One Holdings.
He spoke to us about the challenges and difficulties he faced as an exporter just to get certain information which led him to create the global trade platform - a plan in the making for a decade.

Employment in the sector expanded in 2018 moving from 79 thousand 425 to 79 thousand 600.

The Planning Institute of Jamaica had predicted that the real value-added for the manufacturing industry is expected to increase with higher output from food, beverages and tobacco, and other manufacturing sub-industries.

It is anticipated that these will materialize as a result of improvements made in the production equipment, greater demand, and growth in available financing options for the industry
The documents are to be debated by both Houses of Parliament.
