Several organisations in Portland along with the Social Development Commission (SDC) came together to share on the work being done in the parish.

Known as October Fest, the event which is in its fourth year has one goal – to contribute to economic development in Portland.

Among the organisations present were the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Social Development Commission and Tax Administration of Jamaica, showing their products while interacting with residents about  present and accessible opportunities in the island.

According to the Community Development Officer at the Social Development Commission, Nadine Simpson Mclean, citizens must be more involved in their communities for these activities to be a success.

The Heart Trust/ NTA was also present at the event. Regional recruitment officer, Ryan Amos, says more youth must get involved in skills training programmes.

The Jamaica Coalition against Domestic Violence also used the opportunity to make an appeal to citizens to break the silence on abuse.
