Despite a 7.8 per cent decline in the unemployment rate in Jamaica, poverty is on the rise at 19. 3 per cent.
The People’s National Party president Dr Peter Phillips says this is as a result of unequal distribution of income in the country.
Dr Phillips says the strategies being employed by the Holness led administration are clearly not relieving the plight of people living below the poverty line.
“What we are seeing is a phenomenal increase in the level of poverty, which shows that the consumption of the poor is getting worse,” Dr Phillips says.
At the same time, Economist Ralston Hyman outlines what he believes are the reasons for the poverty crisis over the years.
