Rising Temperatures in Jamaica Prompt Urgency for Mitigation Measures – As temperatures continue to escalate on the island, Jamaicans are increasingly feeling the impact. The effects of these heightened temperatures permeate various aspects of daily life, from agriculture and construction to healthcare. Consequently, many are now questioning the necessity of implementing comprehensive measures, including a heat warning system, to mitigate the most detrimental consequences.
To delve into the issues, we are joined via Zoom by Dr. Jayaka Campbell, a lecturer, and co-coordinator of the Renewable Energy Masters Program in the Department of Physics at UWI Mona, as well as a senior researcher from the Climate Study Group. Additionally, we have Evan Thompson, the Director of the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and President of the Regional Association IV of the World Meteorological Organization, present in the studio. Together, they bring valuable insights to address the pressing concerns surrounding rising temperatures and the urgency to establish effective practices for prevention and adaptation.
