The University of the West Indies Hospital (UHWI) has reported full capacity for treating patients who have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The hospital says previous measures were taken to facilitate more patients however, it is now unable to do so. This comes as, in an effort to facilitate additional patients, patients with other illnesses are being affected.

The UWHI says due to the constraints elective and non-emergency procedures will be reduced to half of the usual number.

The hospital says 96% of admitted patients are not vaccinated and the remainder have only received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The UHWI urges Jamaicans to get vaccinated and notes that the vaccination site at Ring Road, Hospital Hall is still administering vaccines with or without appointments on Mondays to Fridays 9 am to 3 pm.

The hospital is also requesting persons between the ages of 18 to 60 years old who have recovered from COVID-19 in the last 28 days to donate plasma to assist in the treatment of those critically ill. Persons can contact the hospital at 876-977-2327 or email at [email protected]
