The People&rsquo;s National Party (PNP) is accusing the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) of deliberate delays in finalising arrangements for the upcoming national political debates, scheduled to begin next week.
In a statement on Thursday (August 14), the PNP said the JLP has missed two key planning meetings with the Jamaica Debates Commission (JDC), including one rescheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the JLP&rsquo;s request. According to the PNP, its debate coordinator was present and ready to proceed, but no JLP representative attended.
The PNP claims the JLP&rsquo;s designated negotiator, Delroy Williams, confirmed attendance in advance but later said he was in May Pen and unavailable. PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell described the delays as &ldquo;unacceptable,&rdquo; stressing that the debates are a critical part of Jamaica&rsquo;s democratic process and give citizens the opportunity to hear directly from all parties on pressing national issues.
With the first debate set for Tuesday, Dr. Campbell says the JLP&rsquo;s repeated no-shows are restricting the time needed to finalise key details and show &ldquo;a troubling disregard&rdquo; for the public, the process, and the work of the independent commissioners facilitating the events. He also expressed empathy for the JDC members, praising their efforts to maintain fairness and transparency.
