Newly appointed President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) Lasonja Harrison, says she is pleased with Education Minister’s approach to address teacher migration. However, she notes that despite migration among teachers always being an issue, this year is especially worrying, given the high volume.
Harrison says more emphasis should be placed on teachers scheduled to exist the system come September 1. She notes most teachers use their leave as a means of transition out of the system.
According to Harrison in a survey conducted by the Jamaica Teachers Association, one hundred and forty (140) principals have indicated that many more teachers have resigned than the numbers put forward. There is also a concern, that the recently announced number of shadow teachers by the Ministry of Education, will dwindle as many among that lot may also be migrating. The Jamaica Teachers Association President says this issue is rather worrisome.
