Workplace Clusters Expected In Community Transmission Phase

Given that Jamaica is in the community transmission phase of COVID-19, he says workplace clusters are expected from time to time. He again stresses the importance of adhering to the safety protocols.

The call centre, which is the Teleperformance Call Centre in Montego Bay Freeport, St. James employs approximately 3,000 people and currently has 18 confirmed cases of the virus.

The Health Minister emphasizes that these cases will emerge occasionally; they just have to be controlled .

Dr. Tufton adds that the absence of a positive case does not determine the success of the measures in place.

President of the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ), Gloria Henry, says business resumed on Wednesday afternoon, following permission from the Ministry of Health.

She however believes, the decision by the St. James Health Department to shut down the company on Wednesday morning was unnecessary.

Gloria Henry says while this may have been done to allow for contact tracing, the zone connected to the employees who have tested positive should have been closed and not the entire company.

Dr. Tufton says the Ministry wants to discourage the closure of companies with COVID-19 cases, however, this was deemed necessary for the Teleperformance Call Centre by the public health team.
