Where is the Minister? – Jamaica Teacher’s Association

The President of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association is again raising concerns about the Government’s failure to appoint an official Minister of Education.

Former Education Minister, Ruel Reid was sacked in March of this year amidst corruption allegations involving himself and the Caribbean Maritime Institute.

According to the Jamaica Teacher’s Association President, Owen Speid, this is affecting the stability of the sector along with educators and students. Speid says he is concerned about the delay in making the appointment and believes that the Prime Minister appears to be the Minister of that Portfolio.

He also raised further concerns about the delay in appointing educators in acting roles to a permanent position. Speid says some of these teachers have been in acting positions for years with no benefits and are fearful that they will soon lose their jobs. He says it appears that these educators are not qualified enough in the eyes of the Minister.

He is also making an appeal for an audit to be done by the Education Ministry in all primary and infant schools. According to him, there is a shortage of furniture for students and teachers. He believes that immediate intervention is required to correct these issues before it worsens.
