Westmoreland welcomes the State of Public Emergency (SOPE) recently declared by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, however, the Custos of the parish says while residents appreciate the security measures, there are several issues that need to be ironed out in order for the measures to be effective.

He says the crime and violence that plagues the parish has been taking a toll on the residents.

Custos Perrin also noted there have been some reservations from certain residents who say the last SOE proved unsuccessful. He’s however hoping the security forces will come around this time with more efficient tactics. Another issue the Custos highlighted is the lengthy period that police have persons detained. He says there must be an organized and lawful process when individuals are held by the police.
