Over 4-million COVID-19 cases were reported to the World Health Organization last week, according to Director General of the W.H.O Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus. The report on the increase in COVID-19 infections and deaths was calculated over the last four weeks.
Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, July 30, Dr. Ghebreyesus says the organization is expecting the cases to surpass 200-million in the coming weeks. He notes the increase has skyrocketed by 80 percent in countries such as Africa, adding that the Delta variant is the common factor.
Dr. Ghebreyesus says there are four other strains of the virus that are rapidly becoming common. He says oxygen supplies have also been dwindling due to the high infection rates.
He says while the W.H.O is providing support to countries experiencing shortages, more trained health workers are needed. He also says much more is needed for research and development.
