Since the Minister of Energy, Science, and Technology, Daryl Vaz‘s presentation on the National Broadband initiative in 2020, the Minister gave an update in Parliament on Tuesday, September 28.

Minister Vaz made note of the three major initiatives that his Ministry currently are looking to implement; cable expansion, fiber optics, and the island-wide hot spot coverage. The Minister highlights that funding has been provided to the public broadcasting corporation for the expansion of channels for educational programming.

He noted that private sector groups have partnered with the Government to execute these major projects. Along with the National Broadband initiative, the Minister Vaz also addressed the Fiber Optic Cable Initiative; he says the aim is to expand this service beyond the corporate area.

Another 100 metres will be placed along the south coast to replace and repair damaged cables. Contracts for the main microwave radios will be awarded by the end of the month, this the Minister says will be used as an alternative should the fiber optic cables be damaged. In regards to the Wifi hot spot initiative, the Minister says the island should have full coverage by March 2022.
